NPQH and the Additional Support Offer - Helping New Headteachers Succeed

8th December 2021 – Tags: Additional Support Offer, NPQH, NPQs

Headteachers play one of the most significant roles in our education system, setting the tone and culture in our schools and leading staff through the most challenging times.

Nationally there were 774 new headteachers recruited in the early part of 2021, up 86% on 2020 figures, and although these numbers have to mean a loss of experienced Headteachers to the system, there is no evidence of an 'exodus' of heads after the pandemic as predicted. But being a new headteacher can be daunting, so having the support of an expert coach can make all the difference. Someone who can give you a good listening too, build your confidence in your decisions and actions, allowing you to explore your responses to current challenges. Plus, we all know that a network of peers at a similar stage of career, experiencing and tackling similar issues can develop a tight bond with colleagues who you can turn to for the whole of your career.

This is what the new Additional Support Offer can provide for new headteachers. It is a national programme that is available and fully funded to any new headteacher in the first two years of appointment who has already taken NPQH or is commencing the new programme.

You will receive five hours of one to one coaching with an experienced school leader and complementary support, which can include an online community for help and sharing ideas and guided visits to schools to explore other heads’ leadership on the ground.

So if you are an experienced headteacher and know a new colleague make sure that they are aware of this additional support offer. And if you would like to spread your expertise by supporting a new headteacher, do get in touch so you can spread your magic and inspire and support the next generation of Headteachers.

The next NPQ for Headship course starts in February 2022 and you can find out more and apply here. Further information on the Additional Support Offer can be found below.
